Project Overview
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a substantial public health burden in Australia, with over one million individuals exhibiting biomedical markers indicative of the condition. CKD is frequently associated with significant oral health complications, with over 90% of affected individuals exhibiting oral signs or symptoms. This study aims to investigate the oral healthcare practices and perceptions of individuals living with CKD, as well as those of their renal healthcare providers. The findings will inform the development of evidence-based, targeted strategies to promote oral health and integrate oral health promotion into the broader management of CKD in the Australian context.
Aims & Objectives
The key objectives of this study include:
· To review the current literature and synthesise the evidence regarding oral healthcare in CKD, and the current strategies and implications for renal healthcare providers.
· To explore the perceptions, predisposing, enabling and need factors among people with CKD regarding oral healthcare.
· To explore the perceptions and practices of renal healthcare providers regarding oral healthcare.
· To integrate the findings to inform strategies to promote the oral health of people with CKD.
